Up and running in 3 steps
Set your goals
Open Macronaut and enter your daily calorie and macro targets. Change them any time — it’s always free.
Log your food
Scan a barcode, search a food, or quick-add manually. With Macronaut Plus you can also snap a photo or just say what you ate.
Connect Apple Health
Grant Health permissions to read your steps, workouts, and active energy, and to write your logged calories and macros back.
Using each feature
Edit your calorie & macro goals
Go to your profile or goals screen, tap the calorie or macro you want to change, and enter a new value (in grams or as a percentage split). Save, and your daily rings update immediately. There is no charge to change your goals — ever.
Scan a barcode
Tap the add (+) button and choose Scan. Point your camera at the product barcode. Macronaut looks it up in the Open Food Facts catalog (with USDA generic foods as a fallback), shows the nutrition, and lets you adjust the serving size before logging.
Log a meal with a photo (Macronaut Plus)
Tap the add (+) button and choose Photo. Capture or pick a picture of your meal. Macronaut estimates the foods and macros and shows you the result, which you can edit before saving. Photos are sent only to generate the estimate and are never used to train AI models.
Log a meal with your voice (Macronaut Plus)
Tap the add (+) button and choose Voice, then just say what you ate — for example, “two eggs, a slice of sourdough, and a black coffee.” Macronaut transcribes it, parses each food, and logs the macros. Review and edit before saving. Audio is processed only to create the log and is never used for training.
Connect & manage Apple Health
During setup, or later in Settings, grant Macronaut access to Apple Health. Macronaut reads your steps, workouts, and active energy, and writes the dietary energy and macros you log back to Health. You can change each permission any time in the Health app under Sharing > Apps.
Export your data
Your logs live on your device. You can export your data from within the App. [Confirm in-app export location & format] To remove all data, delete individual entries or remove the App; to clear synced copies, delete the App’s iCloud data in your device settings.
Manage or cancel Macronaut Plus

Open Settings on your iPhone

Frequently asked questions
Is Macronaut really free?
Yes. Editable macro goals, barcode scanning, manual and quick-add logging, daily macro rings, and Apple Health sync are free forever. Only AI photo and voice logging require the optional Macronaut Plus subscription, because AI processing has a real per-use cost.
Why do AI features cost money when the rest is free?
AI photo and voice logging run on cloud AI infrastructure that costs us money for every request. Gating just those features lets us keep all of the core tracking — including changing your own goals — completely free.
Where is my food diary stored?
On your device, and (if enabled) synced through your own private iCloud account. We do not keep a server-side copy of your food logs. See our Privacy Policy.
Are my meal photos or voice recordings used to train AI?
No. Photos and audio are sent to our processing provider only to generate your nutrition estimate and are not used to train AI models. They are never sold.
Is my Apple Health data safe?
Yes. We only read the categories you approve (steps, workouts, active energy) and write back the nutrition you log. HealthKit data is never sold and never used for advertising. You control every permission in the Health app.
How accurate are the calorie and macro numbers?
Nutrition figures — including AI estimates, barcode lookups, and database results — are estimates for informational purposes only and may be inaccurate. They are not medical or nutritional advice. Always review and adjust before relying on them, and consult a professional for medical guidance.
Which devices are supported?
Macronaut is an iPhone app and requires iOS 18 or later.
Where does the nutrition data come from?
Barcode and search results come from Open Food Facts (nutrition data © Open Food Facts contributors, licensed under the ODbL) with generic and whole foods from USDA FoodData Central.
